Why We Used Red Alert LVL E11 in Our Dudley Reno (and Why It Matters)

Every renovation begins with a story, and our Dudley project is no exception. This one started as an original 1970s fibro house—humble, dated, and ready for a new life. Our clients wanted more than just a cosmetic update. They envisioned a full transformation, and we were up for the challenge.

By the time we’re finished, this home will be completely reimagined. We’re delivering a three-bedroom layout, complete with an ensuite and powder room, a large entertaining deck, all-new external cladding and windows, and a new Colorbond roof that spans both the original home and the new extension. We also upgraded the brick piers and installed a full termite barrier system to protect the structure long-term.

With a project of this scale, structural integrity has been critical—especially as we reconfigure internal walls and stitch new areas into the old footprint. That’s why we chose to use Red Alert LVL E11 for the internal framing. It’s strong, straight, termite-resistant, and engineered to hold its shape well into the future.

You may never see what’s behind the walls once the plasterboard goes up—but these kinds of choices are part of what makes a build last.

Why Framing Matters (Even If You’ll Never See It Again)

Great homes are built on more than just good taste. They’re built on strong, well-considered structures. The quality of your framing impacts everything that comes after—how straight the walls stand, how well the finishes fit, and how your home holds up over time.

That’s why we don’t take shortcuts with the skeleton of a house. Whether we’re building from scratch or working within the bones of an existing home, we choose materials that deliver strength, stability, and long-term confidence.

Framing might disappear behind plasterboard, but its performance affects the comfort, durability, and integrity of your home for decades.

What Is Red Alert LVL E11?

Red Alert LVL stands for Laminated Veneer Lumber. It’s an engineered timber product made by bonding multiple layers of thin wood veneers under heat and pressure. This process creates a material that’s far more consistent, stable, and stronger than traditional pine.

The E11 rating refers to its modulus of elasticity, which measures how stiff and strong the timber is. In simpler terms, E11 LVL won’t twist, bow, or warp like pine sometimes can. That means straighter walls, cleaner finishes, and less time adjusting things on site.

A Closer Look at the Two LVL Products We Used

On the Dudley project, we used two types of Red Alert LVL. Each played an important role in the framing of this home:

1. 90×45 E11.7 LVL H2S

  • Dimensions: 90mm wide × 45mm thick
  • Strength Rating: E11.7 (modulus of elasticity), perfect for wall framing
  • Treatment: H2S, offering termite protection for enclosed, above-ground use
  • Used for: Wall studs and internal framing
  • Benefits:
    • Lightweight, straight, and stable—making it easy to work with and ideal for fast, accurate installations
    • Saves time on site because it doesn’t need to be straightened like pine, which is prone to warping
    • Performs reliably in coastal conditions where moisture and movement can affect traditional timber

2. LVL13 240×45 H2S

  • Dimensions: 240mm deep × 45mm thick
  • Strength Rating: E13.2, with added stiffness and load-bearing capacity
  • Treatment: H2S with a 25-year termite protection guarantee
  • Used for: Lintels, beams, and major load-bearing structural elements
  • Benefits:
    • Excellent performance over long spans
    • Minimal movement, even in coastal environments
    • Easy to handle with standard tools and available in long lengths for uninterrupted structural runs

By using each type where it performs best, we ensured structural integrity without overengineering. It’s all part of delivering a home that’s smart, solid, and made to last.

How This Reflects the Way We Build

We don’t pick materials just because they’re available. We choose them because they’re the right fit. On the Dudley reno, Red Alert LVL E11 gave us peace of mind that the framing would stay true and solid for years to come.

It reflects the bigger picture of how we work:

  • We don’t cut corners
  • We don’t use cheap materials that could compromise the result
  • We don’t guess and hope—it’s all intentional

What we do is plan carefully, build purposefully, and focus on getting the best outcome for the structure and the people who will call it home.

Every detail has a reason behind it. And when you pair the right materials with skilled craftsmanship, the results speak for themselves.

If you’re planning a coastal renovation, let’s talk about smart, tailored solutions.
